AI & Custom Algorithms

We Don’t Use AI to Replace Strategy. We Use It to See What Humans Can’t See at Scale

AI is everywhere in advertising now. It optimizes bids, selects placements, generates creative, predicts conversions and automates campaign decisions. These capabilities are changing how advertising is delivered, but automation alone isn’t what makes MarketStorm different.

MarketStorm has been AI-first since 2018

Our approach begins before media activation. We use AI, behavioral data and custom algorithms to identify patterns in consumer behavior that may signal a developing need, changing interest or emerging intent. We don’t just use AI to decide where an ad should go.

We use it to help determine who is worth reaching in the first place.

Our Algorithms Start
With Behavior

Traditional audience targeting often begins with characteristics that describe a person: age, income, household composition, interests, occupation or membership in a predefined audience category.

Those characteristics can be useful, but they are relatively static. Intent isn’t.

Someone can move from having no interest in a product or service to actively considering it in a matter of hours, days or weeks. The change may begin long before that person conducts an obvious search, visits an advertiser’s website or fills out a form. Behavior creates signals of that change, but the challenge is finding meaningful patterns among an enormous amount of digital activity.

That’s where MarketStorm’s AI and custom algorithms come in. We use technology to identify changes in behavior that may indicate something is becoming more important to a consumer.

Instead of asking whether someone fits a target demographic, we are looking for evidence that their behavior is changing in a way that makes them increasingly relevant to a particular business.

ProtoSignals™ Finding Intent Before
It Becomes Obvious

We call these early behavioral indicators ProtoSignals™. A ProtoSignal™ is a behavioral pattern that may indicate a consumer is beginning to move toward a relevant need, problem, interest or decision before that intent becomes explicit.

One action by itself may mean very little. A single article read, topic explored or piece of content consumed doesn’t necessarily indicate meaningful intent. Patterns of behavior can tell a different story. MarketStorm’s algorithms are designed to identify and interpret those patterns, looking for changes that may indicate passive relevance is beginning to become active intent.

This gives MarketStorm an opportunity to enter the consumer journey earlier, while consideration and preferences are still developing. ProtoSignals™ help us recognize intent before the consumer necessarily expresses it through an obvious action such as a search or website visit.

Custom Means Custom

There is another important distinction in the way MarketStorm uses algorithms: we don’t believe every business should be forced into the same audience model.

The behavioral signals that matter to a tax preparation company are different from those that matter to a fitness brand. A national retailer has different consumer behaviors, geographic considerations and purchase cycles from a regional service business. Even two companies within the same industry may operate in markets where consumer behavior, competition and local conditions are significantly different.

Our algorithms can be designed around the specific business, market, geography and objective. That means we’re not just selecting an audience from a catalog. We’re building intelligence around the problem we’re trying to solve.

Market Intelligence
at Local Resolution

The ability to customize intelligence becomes particularly important when a company operates across multiple markets.

National marketing often assumes that consumers who fit the same audience definition will behave similarly regardless of where they live. In practice, markets can be remarkably different. Competition changes. Weather changes. Economics change. Culture changes. Seasonality changes. Consumer needs change. Even the behaviors that indicate emerging intent can differ from one market to another.

MarketStorm’s technology allows us to maintain the advantages of a larger intelligence system while looking at the market at much greater local resolution. A franchise organization, multi-location company or national brand does not necessarily need to choose between national scale and local relevance.

The larger strategy can remain consistent while the intelligence adapts to what is happening within individual markets.

We think of this as market intelligence at local resolution. We are still working on the right name for the capability, but the principle is fundamental to the MarketStorm approach: the business may be national, but intent is often local.

AI Helps Us Separate Identity From Intent

Knowing something about a consumer isn’t the same as knowing what that consumer needs. Someone may be a homeowner for 20 years but need a new roof only once. Someone may fit the demographic profile for a fitness program but have no current interest in joining one. Someone may have the income to purchase a luxury product but no reason to consider it today.

Demographics help answer questions about who someone is. MarketStorm’s algorithms are designed to help answer a different question:

What is their behavior telling us
right now?

That shift from identity toward behavior is central to the MarketStorm Intelligence Engine™. The objective is not to abandon demographic, geographic or contextual information. It is to combine those forms of information with dynamic behavioral intelligence so we can better understand when a consumer may be becoming relevant.

Human Verification Adds Another Layer

Algorithms can identify potential intent, but MarketStorm doesn’t automatically treat every signal as a consumer worth continuing to target. After an audience has been identified and an initial ad is served, MarketStorm has the opportunity to verify that the audience member is human rather than automated traffic.

That creates a progression from ProtoSignals™ to emerging intent, initial activation, human verification and ultimately Intent Retargeting. Once human-verified, that consumer can become eligible for MarketStorm’s cross-channel Intent Retargeting without having to visit the advertiser’s website first.

This is an important difference from traditional retargeting. Conventional retargeting generally begins after a website visit. MarketStorm can begin earlier, when behavioral intelligence indicates emerging intent and the consumer has subsequently been human-verified.

  1. 01 ProtoSignals™ Algorithms Identify potential intent across the open web.

  2. 02 Emerging Intent Behavioral signals indicate growing intent.

  3. 03 Initial Activation An initial ad is
    served to the identified audience.

  4. 04 Human Verification We verify the audience member is human rather than automated traffic.

  5. 05 Intent Retargeting The consumer becomes eligible for cross-channel Intent Retargeting.

We don’t have to wait for the website visit to begin understanding and influencing the journey.

The Algorithms Don’t Belong to a Channel

MarketStorm’s algorithms were designed for a world in which consumers move constantly between media environments. The intelligence that identifies a relevant consumer isn’t inherently a “Display audience” or a “CTV audience.” It’s an audience.

That distinction allows the MarketStorm Intelligence Engine™ to carry audience intelligence across Display, Connected TV, Native, Streaming Audio and Digital Out-of-Home rather than rebuilding the strategy independently inside every channel.

A consumer may first be identified through behavioral signals, become human-verified after an initial ad, encounter the brand through Display, later see it on CTV and hear it through Streaming Audio before eventually searching for the company. Another consumer’s journey may look completely different.

The sequence isn’t what defines the strategy. The intelligence travels with the audience.

JourneyIQ™ Intelligence for a Journey That Doesn’t Follow a Funnel

Identifying intent is only the beginning. Once a relevant consumer enters the MarketStorm ecosystem, the next challenge is continuing to understand and influence that consumer as they move across channels, devices and moments.

This is the thinking behind JourneyIQ™. Rather than assuming consumers follow a predictable funnel, JourneyIQ™ reflects the reality that people research, encounter brands, reconsider, compare, move between environments and return to the process repeatedly. Intent creates opportunities for influence, and influence can change subsequent intent.

Together, they represent an important principle behind MarketStorm’s technology:  Our AI is designed around how people actually behave, not around how a marketing funnel says they should behave.

Our Intelligence Sits Above the Media Platform

MarketStorm uses sophisticated programmatic platforms to activate advertising, but our algorithms are not just the automation built into a DSP. Media platforms have their own AI and machine learning systems designed to make decisions within their environments. Those capabilities are important, and we take advantage of them.

MarketStorm brings another intelligence layer to that infrastructure. Our algorithms help determine the audience opportunity before and across activation. The programmatic platform then provides the infrastructure required to reach those audiences through media.

This distinction is important because platform AI and MarketStorm intelligence solve different problems. Platform AI can make the delivery of advertising more efficient. MarketStorm’s AI is designed to make the audience itself more intelligent.

  2. Media Platform Automation  |  Bidding  |  Inventory  |  Delivery

  3. Media Environments CTV  |  Display  |  Native  |  Audio  |  DOOH

The two work together.
They are not the same thing.

Intelligence That Adapts

The MarketStorm Intelligence Engine™ wasn’t designed around one vertical, one media channel or one definition of the customer. It was designed around human behavior.

That makes adaptability fundamental to the system. The business can change. The geography can change. The competitive environment can change. The behaviors indicating intent can change. Our algorithms allow the intelligence to change with them.

That adaptability is particularly important as advertising platforms themselves evolve. Targeting options change, networks change, inventory changes and platforms increasingly automate decisions that advertisers once controlled manually. MarketStorm’s intelligence does not have to begin again every time the media ecosystem changes because our starting point isn’t the platform.

Our starting point is the consumer.

AI-First Since 2018

Today, nearly every advertising company has an AI story. MarketStorm’s story didn’t begin with the current AI cycle.

We have been using AI and algorithmic audience intelligence since we began running programmatic campaigns in 2018 because the problem we wanted to solve required it. There was too much behavioral data for humans to evaluate manually. Consumer intent changed too quickly for static audience definitions. And media channels were becoming too fragmented to treat each one as a separate strategy.

AI gave us a way to see patterns at scale. Custom algorithms gave us a way to make those patterns relevant to a particular business and market. Programmatic gave us a way to act on them. Cross-channel technology gave us a way to continue the relationship as consumers moved.

That architecture remains at the heart of MarketStorm today.

We don’t use AI because AI is the story.
We use AI because understanding human behavior at scale is the problem we’re trying to solve.

Good to Know

Programmatic can be complicated. It doesn’t have to be. Here are a few things worth knowing.

  • How does MarketStorm use AI?

MarketStorm uses AI to help recognize behavioral patterns and audience opportunities that would be difficult for humans to identify consistently at scale.

While much advertising AI focuses on optimizing bids, placements or conversions after a campaign begins, MarketStorm applies AI earlier to help answer a more fundamental question: Who should the audience be?

  • What does “custom algorithm” mean?

  • Why not just let the advertising platform’s AI find the audience?

  • Does MarketStorm use AI to replace human strategy?
