Audience Intelligence
An Audience Shouldn’t Be a Category. It Should Be an Understanding
Book a Demo Talk to MarketStormMost advertising begins by selecting an audience.
Homeowners, parents, business owners, luxury consumers, sports enthusiasts, age ranges and interest groups are all familiar ways of defining who should receive an ad. Those characteristics can be useful, but they primarily tell us who someone is. MarketStorm is interested in something more dynamic: what is happening in that person’s life right now that makes them relevant to a particular brand?
Audience Intelligence is how MarketStorm turns behavioral data into a deeper understanding of who may be developing intent, which consumers are worth influencing and how that audience changes as consumer behavior changes. Rather than building larger audiences, our objective is to build more meaningful ones.
From Audience Targeting to Audience Intelligence
Traditional targeting often starts with a predefined group and then looks for opportunities to reach it. MarketStorm begins with behavior. The MarketStorm Intelligence Engine™ analyzes behavioral signals and patterns that may indicate a developing need, changing interest or emerging problem. Those patterns help us distinguish broad relevance from something much more valuable: emerging intent.
Consider two consumers who look nearly identical on paper. They may live in the same neighborhood, have similar household incomes, be approximately the same age and share many of the same interests. Demographically, they belong in the same audience. Behaviorally, however, they may be completely different. One may have no current need for the advertiser’s product or service, while the other’s recent behavior may indicate that something has changed and a need is beginning to emerge.
That difference is at the heart of Audience Intelligence. We aren’t simply trying to identify people who resemble the customer. We are trying to understand which consumers may be becoming relevant now.

ProtoSignals™ Recognizing When Relevance
Begins to Change
Begins to Change
MarketStorm uses ProtoSignals™ to describe early behavioral indicators that may suggest a consumer is moving toward a relevant need, problem, interest or decision. One behavior rarely tells the whole story. A single article read, topic explored or piece of content consumed may mean very little on its own. Patterns of behavior can tell us much more.
Our technology looks for changes and combinations of signals that can help us recognize when a consumer who was previously only broadly relevant may be becoming actively relevant. This gives MarketStorm an opportunity to identify emerging intent before the consumer necessarily expresses it through an obvious action such as a search or website visit.
ProtoSignals™ are important because they help move audience strategy away from simply describing the consumer and toward understanding what may be changing for that consumer.

Intent Changes. Audiences Should Too.
One of the limitations of static audience targeting is that people don’t remain equally relevant forever. Needs emerge and disappear. Research begins and ends. Purchases are made. Seasons change. Competitive options change. Life circumstances change. The person may remain demographically identical while their relevance to the advertiser changes dramatically.
MarketStorm’s approach is designed around that movement. Audience Intelligence should reflect changes in consumer behavior rather than assuming that someone who qualified for an audience yesterday should automatically remain equally valuable tomorrow.
This is one reason behavioral intelligence is so important to the MarketStorm model. Intent is dynamic, so the audiences built around it need to be dynamic as well.

Human Verification Makes the Audience Stronger
Behavioral signals can indicate potential intent, but a signal alone isn’t enough for MarketStorm to continue targeting someone. Once the MarketStorm Intelligence Engine™ identifies a potentially relevant audience, an initial ad is served. That gives us the opportunity to verify that the audience member is human rather than automated traffic.
Once human-verified, that consumer can become eligible for MarketStorm’s Intent Retargeting. This creates an important progression in the audience: behavioral intelligence helps us identify potential intent, activation gives us the opportunity for human verification, and verification allows us to continue influencing that consumer across available channels.
This is different from conventional website retargeting. Traditional retargeting generally waits for someone to visit the advertiser’s website before the relationship begins. MarketStorm can begin earlier, once emerging intent has been identified and the consumer has subsequently been human-verified. We don’t simply retarget a signal. We continue the relationship with a verified human who has demonstrated relevant intent.

The Audience Doesn’t Belong to a Channel
Consumers move constantly between media environments. Someone can be browsing online in the morning, watching television that evening and listening to streaming audio in the car the next day. The underlying consumer need doesn’t disappear simply because the media environment changes.
That is why MarketStorm’s audience architecture is designed to work across channels. A human-verified consumer demonstrating relevant intent may encounter a brand through Display, later see it through Connected TV, hear it through Streaming Audio and eventually search for the company or visit its website. Another consumer’s journey may look completely different.
CTV, Display, Native, Streaming Audio and Digital Out-of-Home are therefore not five separate definitions of the customer. They are different environments in which the same underlying audience intelligence can be activated.
The consumer controls the journey, while MarketStorm’s technology allowed the intelligence to travel with the audience.
JourneyIQ™ Understanding the Audience as the Journey Develops
Identifying the right audience is only the beginning. Consumers rarely move neatly from awareness to consideration to purchase. They research, stop, encounter brands, reconsider, compare alternatives, search, leave, return and eventually act. Intent and influence interact throughout that process.
This is the thinking behind JourneyIQ™. Rather than assuming that consumers follow a predictable funnel, JourneyIQ™ reflects the reality that people move through a much less orderly period between emerging intent and eventual demand capture.
Within this architecture, the different parts of MarketStorm’s technology work together. ProtoSignals™ helps us recognize when something may be beginning. Audience Intelligence helps us determine who matters. Human verification strengthens the audience. Intent Retargeting allows us to continue the relationship. JourneyIQ™ helps connect that intelligence as consumers move across channels and moments.

Market Intelligence at Local Resolution
Audiences also don’t behave identically everywhere. The same demographic
audience can behave very
differently from one market to another because competition, economics, weather, culture, seasonality and available
choices all change. The conditions that cause a particular need to emerge may also be
highly local.
For national brands, franchise organizations and multi-location companies,
this creates an important
challenge. They need the advantages of scale without assuming that consumers in every local market behave exactly the
same way.
MarketStorm’s Audience Intelligence allows us to examine behavioral patterns at
a much more local level
while maintaining the larger strategy. We think of this as market intelligence at local resolution. It is more than
simply geotargeting smaller areas. It is recognizing that the signals, behaviors, competitive conditions and
opportunities that matter may differ significantly by market.
The brand may be national, but the circumstances creating consumer intent are often local. Our intelligence needs to understand both.
Connecting Physical and Digital Audiences
Audience Intelligence can also help connect physical and digital environments. Digital Out-of-Home, for example, is traditionally considered an awareness medium. MarketStorm can capture audiences exposed to DOOH content and then use behavioral intelligence to understand which consumers within that exposed group are also demonstrating relevant intent.
This allows us to move beyond simply retargeting everyone who may have passed a screen. Exposure can tell us who was there, while behavior can help us understand who within that audience matters to the advertiser. Those relevant consumers can then become part of the broader MarketStorm audience strategy, allowing physical-world awareness to continue through digital channels.
Audience Intelligence Isn’t Platform Intelligence
Advertising platforms have become extraordinarily sophisticated at finding consumers likely to respond within their own environments. We use those technologies and benefit from them, but MarketStorm Audience Intelligence serves a different purpose.
We don’t want our entire understanding of the consumer to be defined by the targeting options available within a single DSP, media network or channel. The MarketStorm Intelligence Engine™ creates an intelligence layer that sits above activation infrastructure. Our understanding of the audience begins with consumer behavior, while the advertising platforms provide the infrastructure through which that intelligence can be activated.
That distinction becomes increasingly important as the advertising ecosystem changes. Targeting capabilities will evolve. Media products will consolidate. Algorithms will become more automated. Inventory will move between platforms.

From Audience
to Influence
Book a Demo Talk to MarketStorm Ultimately, Audience Intelligence isn’t valuable simply because it creates a more sophisticated targeting segment. It is valuable because it gives brands an opportunity to influence consumers while their decisions are still developing.
ProtoSignals™ helps us recognize emerging intent. AI and custom algorithms help us interpret it. Human verification helps us strengthen the audience. Intent Retargeting allows the relationship to continue before a website visit. JourneyIQ™ helps connect that relationship across a non-linear consumer journey. Market intelligence at local resolution allows the strategy to adapt to meaningful differences between markets.
Programmatic technology then gives that intelligence somewhere to go.
That is the difference between
selecting an audience and understanding one. MarketStorm isn’t simply asking who we can reach.
We are trying to understand who matters now, what their behavior is telling us and how we can influence what happens next.
Good to Know
Programmatic can be complicated. It doesn’t have to be. Here are a few things worth knowing.
-
What is Audience Intelligence?
Audience Intelligence is MarketStorm’s approach to understanding who matters based on behavior and context rather than simply assigning consumers to static demographic or interest categories.
The question isn’t only, “Does this person fit the target demographic?” It is also, “What is this person’s behavior telling us about their relevance right now?”
